Hampshire-based carpenter Jon Lewis recently partnered with Richard Burbidge to revamp his clients’ hallways into sleek, stylish spaces. With 17 years of experience, Jon carefully chose several of our stairparts products that perfectly matched the property’s style and his clients’ vision, successfully modernising their staircases.

Project 1: Oak Stair and White Spindle Refurbishment

For the first project, Jon took on a full staircase refurbishment, focusing on preserving the original structural features while introducing a modern touch. Over the course of four days, he transformed the staircase by combining the natural warmth of oak with a clean, contemporary look. Jon replaced the existing stair parts with a white oak handrail and base rail, paired with sleek white spindles, achieving a sophisticated and modern update.

Before / After

A standout feature of this renovation was Jon’s use of our Oak ReNewel® cladding kits. These kits are an ideal choice for smaller renovation projects where maintaining the structural integrity of the existing posts is key, offering an easy-to-install solution that results in a flawless finish.

Jon mentioned that without the kit, the process would have taken significantly longer due to the extensive preparation required, including removing the existing posts, levelling, and preparing the new product for installation. By using the cladding kits, these concerns were alleviated, as the kits arrive ready to install, ensuring a seamless and time-efficient refurbishment process.

Project 2: A Modern Makeover for a 70s Style Staircase

For the second project, Jon faced the challenge of updating a 70s-style staircase. His aim was to replace the existing handrails and spindles with more modern elements, giving the space a fresh, contemporary feel. He selected our PaintReady mix-and-match products to create a cohesive and contemporary look.

Before / After

The renovation involved installing white oak rails and newel post alongside PaintReady spindles, transforming the staircase into a striking focal point. Jon commented on the superior quality of the products, noting that the oak handrails were well-engineered with no visible joins and completed with a smooth finish. The PaintReady range, being water-based rather than solvent-based, removed the need for extensive preparation, which is usually required with other solvent-based products, and reduced the time required to achieve a professional finish.

Jon's projects illustrate that full-scale renovations aren’t always required to breathe new life into your home. By focussing on thoughtful design choices and quality materials for key areas within your home, you can significantly enhance and refresh your living space, giving your property an entirely new feel and revitalised ambiance without the need for extensive remodelling.
