A wall-mounted stair handrail is fixed directly to the wall with brackets, so it works on enclosed staircases where there is no balustrade, or as a second rail opposite one. Every wall-mounted handrail in our range is shaped for a comfortable grip and sits 35mm to 60mm from the wall, depending on the profile and bracket.

Oak is the most popular choice for a wall-mounted handrail. It is hard-wearing, smooth to hold and looks good with a clear varnish or natural oil finish. Our oak wall-mounted handrails come in two classic profiles: the rounded mopstick and the pig's ear, which has a flat back that sits neatly against the wall. Both are available in 4200mm lengths and can be cut to size.

For a lighter look, choose a pine wall-mounted handrail in the mopstick profile. Pine takes stain, varnish or paint well. If you plan to paint, our PaintReady® wooden handrails arrive primed and ready for your top coat, saving a step on site.

The style comes together based on your desired bracket finish. For a traditional or period hallway, pair an oak wall-mounted handrail with antique brass or brass effect brackets. For a modern wall-mounted stair handrail, choose black, gunmetal or brushed nickel brackets with a clean oak or painted rail. Finish each end with matching end caps. How do you attach a handrail to the wall?

To attach a handrail to the wall securely, follow these steps:

  1. Determine Placement: Mark the height of the handrail on the wall, typically 900mm to 1000mm above the tread. Use a level to ensure the marks are straight and consistent.
  2. Install Brackets: Securely install the handrail brackets at regular intervals (no more than 900mm apart) according to the measurements. Ensure each bracket is fastened into the studs or masonry for optimal stability.
  3. Attach the Handrail: Place the handrail onto the installed brackets and align it correctly. Use screws or bolts to secure the handrail to the brackets, ensuring a tight fit. If the handrail is long, you may need to join multiple sections.
  4. Finish and Test: Double-check the handrail for level and make sure all fasteners are tightened properly. Test the handrail for stability by applying light pressure.
